Seeking a TEACHER AIDE

 

Description : Under the supervision of the Center Supervisor, the Teacher Aide assists the teacher in supporting the educational and developmental needs of pre-school aged children, including classroom management, instruction, and ensuring a safe and effective learning environment. The teacher aide will work with the teacher, family members, and other staff to achieve positive outcomes for children and families.

Maintains strict confidentiality regarding children, their families, and other staff members.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of children. Understand and implement safety rules, emergency procedures, and plans.

  2. Assists the teacher with the daily operation of the classroom, planning, supervising, and implementing activities.

  3. Assists the teacher with classroom setup and organization.

  4. Fosters the belief that parents are their child's first teachers and reinforces this concept with practical suggestions from the child's parent.

  5. Exhibits a genuine, nurturing, and caring attitude to all children.

  6. Create a warm, accepting, and developmentally appropriate environment that encourages cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development.

  7. Ensure an effective, purposeful classroom and be responsive to children's needs.

  8. Maintains current and accurate records, forms, and duties as requested by the Center Supervisor, Specialist, Coordinators, and Manager.

  9. Supervise all children at all times.

  10. Assist the teacher with completing and submitting lesson plans two (2) weeks in advance for approval.

  11. Assists in developing realistic lesson plans responsive to the needs of all the children.

  12. Use materials and resources to encourage active exploration and physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development;

  13. Assists in developing goals and objectives for each child and the group as a whole.

  14. Work with children with special needs and provide individualized support as needed.

  15. Knowledge of behavior management techniques and strategies.

  16. Write anecdotes for each child daily/weekly and use the data collected to assess each child.

  17. Assists in maintaining a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio for each child.

  18. The teacher assistant works cooperatively with the teacher, conducting at least two (2) parent/teacher conferences and two (2) home visits per school year to discuss the child's progression with the parents.

  19. Annually assist the teacher in administering developmental, behavioral, and speech/language screenings. Integrating special needs children positively and respectfully.

  20. Diligently pursue basic Mvskoke language and continue to expand from words and numbers to practical phrases.

  21. Assists the teacher in guiding and facilitating activities for the children, including daily activities, field trips, room arrangement, and selecting equipment and materials in the classroom.

  22. Model self-help skills through family-style dining and support the development of social skills and sound nutritional practices. Model a willingness to try new foods. Assisting with the cleanup of spills and areas before leaving the table.

  23. Inspect the classroom, playground, and bus daily. Document repairs or maintenance needs and send them to the Center Supervisor.

  24. Operate the school bus daily to transport students to and from the Head Start Preschool center, field trips, and other activities. Must conduct pre- and post-trip inspections of the bus before and after bus routes and/or field trips.

  25. Provide guidance and participate in scheduled monthly parent meetings as needed.

  26. Participates with parents and children in group socialization experiences.

  27. Maintain cleanliness of the center and classroom, such as sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming, and disinfecting restrooms. Assist in the daily cleaning of buses.

  28. Must participate in the Annual Community Assessment and program Self-Assessment and conduct ongoing recruitment.

  29. Must complete an activity leave form before leaving the work site on Head Start Preschool business.

  30. Must document and report suspected child abuse, neglect, etc., as mandated by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Head Start Preschool Policies, tribal, state & federal laws.

  31. Adapt the classroom environment and curriculum to meet the individual needs of all children, including children with disabilities.

  32. Ensures transitions are smooth and helps children move from one group to another.

  33. Use sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with children, parents, and staff.

  34. Must be able to withstand possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues and exposure to communicable diseases, and be familiar with emergency procedures.

  35. Must obtain Food Handlers Permit and CPR/AED, MAT & First Aid card, and any other required trainings as scheduled by the program.

  36. Must attend all mandatory training, workshops, pre-service, parent meetings, staff meetings, and professional development throughout the year and implement knowledge and techniques gained.

  37. Must be willing to stay after hours, if necessary, to complete an important task or meeting.

  38. Must be willing to attend out-of-town and/or overnight training.

  39. Upon hire, must obtain an initial TB skin test and physical, and thereafter obtain a physical annually.

  40. This position furloughs through summer break.

 

Minimum Requirements:


  • Education — Child Development Certification (CDA)

    • Experience — One (1) year working with children in a group or educational setting.

    • Must have an Oklahoma Driver’s License.


 

Preferred Requirements:


  • Education — Associate Degree in Child Development or Early Childhood

  • Education from an accredited college/university

  • Experience — One (1) year working with children in a group or educational setting.
