Position Description:

The Pediatric Medical Assistant at JWCH works under the direct supervision of the Clinic Administrator or Clinic Designee. Within the regulatory scope of practice, the Medical Assistant provides direct patient care by performing routine procedures and technical supportive functions in a pediatric setting. Medical Assistants at Wesley Health Care Centers collaborate closely with healthcare teams to deliver compassionate, child-friendly care to pediatric patients.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Performs routine (noninvasive) patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care personnel following established clinic policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities.
  2. Provides child-centered patient care, ensuring a welcoming, reassuring environment for children and their families.
  3. Collects and records patient data, including height, weight, BMI, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and growth chart measurements per pediatric protocols.
  4. Assists with pediatric screenings, including vision, hearing, developmental milestones, and lead screenings.
  5. Administers age-appropriate immunizations and medications per provider’s order after verification by a licensed healthcare professional.
  6. Performs venipuncture, finger sticks, and PPD skin placement with special attention to pediatric patients’ comfort and anxiety levels.
  7. Applies/removes bandages and dressings with gentle care, explaining procedures in a child-friendly manner.
  8. Assists in minor procedures and ensures proper infection control using pediatric-specific aseptic techniques.
  9. Provides basic health education to parents/caregivers, including guidance on nutrition, hygiene, immunization schedules, and developmental milestones.
  10. Supports pediatric patients and families with self-management goals as directed by case management or licensed healthcare providers.
  11. Performs routine clerical duties, including scheduling well-child visits and follow-ups, routing calls efficiently, and ensuring accurate documentation.
  12. Maintains exam rooms and pediatric care areas, ensuring they are clean, stocked, and equipped with child-friendly supplies (e.g., distraction toys, stickers).
  13. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, case conferences, and in-service meetings focused on pediatric healthcare.
  14. Upholds confidentiality, safety, and infection control protocols in all patient interactions.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned to support pediatric patient care.

Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate
  3. Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture
  4. Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association
  5. Two years’ experience in an ambulatory clinic preferred
  6. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
