Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, as part of the aquatics team, lifeguards maintain constant pool surveillance and also serve as front desk attendants during aquatics programming. They are accountable for prompt response to emergencies, enforcement of pool rules, and provision of first aid when required. With a positive attitude and a focus on patron satisfaction, lifeguards prioritize excellent customer service.

To prioritize the safety of patrons and ensure proper response during emergencies, it is mandatory for all aquatics staff to attend all trainings and ongoing in-services.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Constantly surveys patrons in the facility by scanning pool and staying alert.
  • Maintains order in swimming areas.
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas and activities.
  • Acts immediately and appropriately according to training to ensure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required and according to training until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Performs various duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pool area and bathrooms.  
  • Serves as ambassador of the YWCA, presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Adheres to all YWCA lifeguard procedures.
  • Perform related job duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Understand and support the YWCA's mission, vision, and policies, without compromising the goals of the organization. Serving as a role model for the Lubbock community both in demeanor and in lifestyle habits.
  • Possession of Lifeguard certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Possession of exceptional customer service skills.
  • Skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Very strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Present self professionally in appearance and mannerism at all times.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours from time to time, including evenings or weekends.
  • Infrequent travel: 0-10 days/year.
  • Pass a criminal history background check and FBI fingerprint check.
  • Ability to relate well with a variety of populations.

  • Occasionally work at outdoor and indoor events for extended periods of time.
