As an integral member of the interdisciplinary palliative care program, the palliative care chaplain provides spiritual care and emotional support to patients with serious illness and their families. The chaplain works as part of an interdisciplinary team to address the spiritual, emotional, and existential needs of patients and families facing serious illness, death, and dying. This role is crucial in offering comfort, guidance, and meaning-making in line with the spiritual and cultural values of each individual. This position will join two existing chaplains in the palliative care program and will be housed within the Pediatric Palliative Care team in the children’s hospital, primarily focused on supporting the spiritual needs of children and their families. There will also be some responsibilities to support adult palliative care patients and broader palliative care program initiatives. Key Responsibilities include providing thorough spiritual assessments, attending daily rounds, conducting and documenting spiritual care assessments, assisting in advance directives, conducting religious rituals, collaborating with hospital and community clergy, responding to spiritual support requests, supporting grief and bereavement initiatives, participating in care conferences and education activities, offering guidance and education on spiritual care, assisting in educational program development, providing self-care support to team members, and making appropriate referrals. Qualifications include a Master of Divinity or equivalent, 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, board certification or eligibility, knowledge of various religious and cultural practices, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience with serious illness and end-of-life care, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Preferred skills include board certification, familiarity with legal and ethical healthcare issues, experience with diverse families, and hospital-based spiritual care experience.
